Do only V36 courses count towards the major and minor?
The courses that will count towards your major will not necessarily show up as V36 courses. The list of courses that qualify towards your ES major are listed at http://cas.nyu.edu/object/environment.tracks#science and http://cas.nyu.edu/object/environment.tracks#value. You can enroll in any of the courses offered on that list, regardless of whether or not it is a V36, and it will count towards your major or minor.
How do I declare an ES major or minor?
You can declare an Environmental Studies major or minor by contacting the Environmental Studies Program Coordinator at:

How can I find ES courses that will be offered in Fall 07?
ES courses can be found at http://cas.nyu.edu/object/environment.fall. This list will be updated when new courses are added.
Can Environmental Science (V23.0880) count as a substitution for the core Environmental Systems Science course (V36.0100)?
Yes.
Can the General Studies course on Environmental Science (T07. 5005, Environmental Studies, Prof Pataki) count as a substitution for the core Environmental Systems Science course (V36.0100)?
Yes.
Can the Natural Science I: Earth and Environment (V55.0203) count as a substitution for the core Environmental Systems Science course (V36.0100)?
No.
Does AP Environmental Science count towards the core Environmental Systems Science course (V36.0100)?
AP Env Sci does not count towards the core V36.0100 (Environmental Systems Science).
Is
V36.0200, Earth System Science (Environmental Studies) the same as the
V49 course with the same title? If I have taken the V49 course, will it
count towards an ES major or minor?
The two courses have
the same content. The V49 course numbering has been phased out. If you
have taken the V49 course, it will count towards your ES major or minor.
Would it be possible to get started on an internship in fall 2007? Can I take it over two semesters?
Internships will first be offered Spring 08. They are normally one-semester, 4-credit courses.
Can
a course count for Environmental Studies if it is also being used for
another major/minor? (For example, can the Cities in a Global Context
course count for both ES and Urban Design majors?)
The ES
Program's policy (for both the major and minor) is that courses cannot
satisfy more than one requirement. Since a supported major or minor is
required of the ES major, students cannot count one course towards both
of these requirements.
If I wanted to enroll in a graduate-level course for Wagner or graduate-level Biology, is permission/access code needed?
Access
to graduate-level courses is at the instructor's discretion. ES
students are encouraged to take appropriate graduate-level
environmental courses.
When will the core Capstone course (V36.0900) first be taught? Is it replaceable?
The
Capstone will first be offered Fall 2008. It is not replaceable with
other courses, as it is a uniquely designed course central to the ES
major.
If I
declare a major in Environmental Studies I would also need to minor in
a corresponding subject. But I am already in a specific degree program
and it would be difficult for me to have two majors and a minor. Are
there exceptions to this rule?
The Program only allows the corresponding majors and minors listed at http://environment.as.nyu.edu/object/environment.tracks.science
and http://environment.as.nyu.edu/object/environment.tracks.values at the moment.
The
ES Major requires completing a major or minor from an approved list.
Can I fulfill this ES requirement with a major or minor other than the
ones on the approved list?
At this point, the ES Program
will only count approved majors and minors towards this requirement.
The list is based on a number of carefully considered criteria such as
curriculum, faculty presence and relationship to ES courses and tracks.
The list of approved majors and minors will be reassessed as faculty
and programs change and evolve.
How do I contact the Program for advisement or with questions related to the Environmental Studies Program?
You can reach the Program's advisor at environmental dot studies at nyu dot edu.
Does Earth System Science, taken in the Earth and Environmental Science Department, count towards to ES degree?
Earth System Science taken as a
V49 course has now been transferred to be a V36 course in Environmental Studies.
You will
receive credit toward your degree in Environmental Studies from having successfully completed the same course
when it was listed as V49.
See the ES Program Coordinator to complete paperwork to make this official.
